Replacing Brake Pads & Rotors

Honda rotors have the tendency to warp as they age. When the rotors can no longer be resurfaced, you will need to replace them entirely. The following procedure explains changing your rotors with SAME SIZE rotors: be it aftermarket cross-drilled or slotted, or just regular Honda OEM replacement rotors. It is highly recommended that you use NEW BRAKE PADS when you install new rotors.

Please be very careful: DO NOT INHALE the brake dust while working on the rotors. Work in a well-ventilated area. Secure the wheels of the car that you won't be working on so that the car does not roll back or forth.

Front Brake Pad & Rotor replacement.

1. Raise the wheel of the car which the side that you will be replacing the rotor is on. Remove the wheel.

2. On the caliper there are two bolts. You will need to remove the lower bolt (the one closest to the ground) in order to change your brake pads. It may be a bit difficult to use a socket wrench down there because space is limited. Vise Grips works really well though.

3. Once you have removed this lower bolt, the caliper will be able to swing upward (as shown below), and you will now be able to remove the worn brake pads. 
(If you want to also replace the rotors, skip to step 8.)

4. Prepare the new brake pads by applying the Molykote (the black goo that comes along with the brake pads) between the back of the brake pad and the new shims. You do not need to use much, the shim will spread it about. If you see some of the Molykote coming out as you put the shim onto the brake pad, wipe it off carefully. Do not get it on the pad surface.

5. Install the new pads in the caliper holding area (as shown below)

6. Chances are that you will need to push back the caliper before it can fit around the new pads. To do this you can use the designated tool, or just a regular C-Clamp. Do not push it back too far. Do it little by little and try to make it fit over the pads by swinging it down each time. 

7. Once it can fit over the new pads, tighten the caliper bolts. Repeat on other side. 

8. To remove the rotors, you'll need to remove the caliper mounting bolts. They are easy to spot on the inner side of the caliper mount. These bolts are really on tight so be prepared! 

9. With the mount off, you now need to remove the rotor, which is secured by 2 screws on the rotor itself (as shown below). These also may be stuck in place so you may need an impact driver to remove them. 

10. With everything off (as shown below) you can now start replacing parts. 

11. Install the new rotor (some rotors are specifically made for driver or passenger sides, look for markings on the rotor itself) and use the screws to secure it. 

12. Install the caliper mount, and new brake pads (see steps 4 to 7). 

13. Replace wheel. Repeat for other side.

Rear Brake Pad & Rotor replacement.

1. Engage the emergency brake. This will ease the process of removing the lug nuts.

2. Raise side/rear of the car and remove the wheel. Disengage the emergency brake.

3. Remove the dust cover by removing the screws shown below. 

4. You know have access to the caliper bolts. You need to remove the lower bolt (shown below). The area there is really tight so you may need to use Vise Grips here to remove this bolt. Once it is off, swing the caliper upward and you will be able to remove the pads. (Skip to step 9 if you also wish to replace the rotors)

5. Prepare the new brake pads by applying the Molykote (the black goo that comes along with the brake pads) between the back of the brake pad and the new shims. Place it into the large groove (see below) and turn clockwise (I think it's clockwise, try it both ways.) Do not push it back too far. Do it little by little and try to make it fit over the pads by swinging it down each time. 

8. Once it can fit over the new pads, tighten the caliper bolts. Repeat on other rotor.

9. To remove the rotors, you'll need to remove the caliper mounting bolts. They are easy to spot on the inner side of the caliper mount. These bolts are really on tight so be prepared!
