Wierd speedo problem.

ok so i was driving along about 70 mph this morning when my speedo made a horrible noise(like small gears grinding) then it fell to 0mph, while still makin the grinding noise. i drove about a mile with the grind before i came to a stop light. when i drove off the speedo worked(it has always had a small bounce between 0-20mph) as it normally would… until i got up to 70 again and it fell to 0mph and started makin the grinding noise. it repeated this about 6 time so i knew the cable wasnt screwed even if it was it wouldnt b as bad. so i got home took the cluster out and walla the cable was like new, the square drive key was securely attached to the rest of the cable and the clip was in perfect condition. at this point im like WTF i need a need vss:(. anyways i greased the hell outta the cable and the end of the vss that the cable is attached to put it back together and took it for a test drive. it still had the slight bounce at really low speeds but i took it up to 100+ and its good so far. drove it to work and it is still working so idk wat the hell happened to it because i didnt see anything broken. i will update if it craps out again

Was the grinding coming from the speedo gage area or somewhere else? My speedo was doing similar stuff, it would work then quit, come back, etc. Turns out the cable was coming out of the transmission, I just had to push it back down. I didn’t get any weird grinding though. Sounds like your problem is with the gage itself.

yes the grinding is coming from inside the VSS. and mine does work and quit all the time. from what ive observed it quits if i accelerate really fast or when i get over 80mph. has anyone else had this problem? im sure its sum gears in there that are either misaligned or just really messed up. any input would be nice

i am currently having the slight problem. not sure if has anything to do with vss as it is intach into the tranny gear as it spins. i have an extra one but a bitch to get to coz i got big hands but anyway i been getting bouncing speeds anywhere along 35- 80 mph. worse is around 65-70. it bounce fast like a rev limit lmao…
also has squeaky sound while driving at speeds of 35 and up. s this morning i took out the cable at the vss side and upright it and slowly use penatrating blaster bolt rust remover etc like wd-40. let it soa and spray slowly for 30 mins and soak some more. put back and drove to casino 45mins and everything has been smooth and seem to fixed my squeak and bouncing speeds. let see it if holds up…also notice u greased it up did u do like me and dip in oil at least let it get into the old cable? might help but for me i was too lazy to take everything out so i did it the smart and fast way.

i dont think its my cable thats the problem anymore because i can still hear it spinning when the speedo dies. so im thinking i might just have to get a new speedo or entire cluster.

ive searched all over the internet for info im so fraustrated i went to hondatech :frowning:

is it possible i could take the gauge itself apart and service/fix it? i mean whats the worst that could happen more than a gear that misaligned…

I have never done it myself taking apart the cluster and replacing things inside. If u can get ur hands on spare parts and time go ahead and give it a shot. someone else chime in and give him some help thanks… goodluck!

Update

been about a week now since ive had the problem. it seems to be gettin better or sumthin but now it only dies obove 90 mph which leads me to believe its the internals of the speedo that needs cleaning or something. im waiting on the bulbs to do the LED swap  at which time ill try taking the speedo apart with help from the FSM

i think i found the fucker:angel:

it died today again and i realized the steering wheel still felt assisted. then BAM it hit me… power steer system runs off that thing mounted on the tranny. checked it out and the tab was broken probably from when i did my clutch back in winter, makin it possible for the pump/sensor to pop out of the tranny thus disengaging it from idle gear(or watever its called) when pressure is built up in the tranny usually at high speeds.

this still doesnt explain why i was hearing the grinding sound comming from the cluster but i zip tied it down to a braket i kinda fabed up so ill see what happens from here

take the cluster out and look where the cable goes into it. Maybe if it is grinding you can see some sort of evidence of that.

cable is in prestine condition. it was my first guess when the problem first started
