    hot alternator

My dash lights are all dim and car is dying,
most likely its the alternator, so i decided to check it out after i got home but the alternator was really hot!!

I know my alternator is bad, but is it normal for it to be hot liek that?

I am planning to replace just the brushes, but if the alternator being hot is a bad thing, then i may need to get a new alternator.

I bet the bearings are going bad causing a lot of extra friction. I believe I paid about $25 for mine.

If the brushes are bad, you'll usually have a flickering or steady alternator light lit on the dash - usually at low rpms (assuming the light works - it should come on when you turn on the ignition before you start the car).

If the voltage regulator is bad or you have bad grounds someplace, you won't have a warning light.
